The idea for a duo collaboration with pianist/composer Ivan Sokolov was sparked after reading violin and piano sonatas at the Seattle home of Elena Dubinets, a Russian musicologist who had invited each of us to perform with the Seattle Chamber Players as guests in their 2004 Icebreaker II: Baltic Voices, an international conference of contemporary music from the countries of the Baltic Sea. We played through the Shostakovich Viola Sonata, which was inspired in mood and motif by Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and is permeated by autobiographical quotations from his own symphonies. Vanya then exclaimed that he would like to compose his own Solnechnaya (Sunlight) Sonata for violin and piano that we would premiere in a duo recital during the upcoming season at Birmingham-Southern College. We contacted Charles Mason and Dorothy Hindman to request a duo composed by each of them and were midstream in our planning when Dr. Mason was awarded the 2005 Samuel Barber Rome Prize in Music Composition. The triple duo project was then relocated to Seattle where the Washington Composers Forum presented the TransMagiNations program and then onto Rome where we performed at Villa Aurelia at the American Academy in May 2006 as the culmination of their year in Rome. The current program was augmented from a call for scores in October 2006 by BAMA (Birmingham Art Music Alliance) composers and we are at long last bringing the project back home to Alabama under the title TransBAMAgiNations

Ivan Sokolov has performed as a soloist throughout the former Soviet Union and Europe. He is a regular participant in contemporary music festivals in Russia and abroad, including at the Alternativa, Moscow Autumn, December Nights festivals, the Schleswig-Holstein festival, Almeida Festival London, the Copenhagen Culture festival and others.

Ian Dogole, percussionViolinist/violist Karen Bentley Pollick and multipercussionist Ian Dogole possess a far-reaching musical vision, traversing the realms of Bach, Bartók and Brahms, segueing seamlessly into free improvisation, morphing into Finnish tango and then onto Corea, Gershwin and Monk by way of a Danish salsa. Never constrained by preexisting formulas, their musical adventures transport listeners to previously uncharted musical landscapes. It’s an aural/visual feast for the senses. Join us in the intimate setting of a Mill Valley living room with exquisite views for an evening of spirited and ever-shifting musical dialogues. Limited seating, so please call to make reservations.

Karen Bentley Pollick, violinFEAST has created a completely new sound in music. Combining rigorous classical training with the timeless melodies andy rhythms of the great Irish, Spanish, and American musical traditions, as well as Classical music, their concerts are greeted with wild enthusiasm and standing ovations. FEAST offers a program of delightful variety: brilliant and soulful group numbers are interspersed with soulful duos, solos and trios. The emotional palette ranges from tear-jerking versions of “Danny Boy” to humorous versions of classic songs, and all-out rockin’ versions of hot fiddle tunes. The result is a stunning and unforgettable musical banquet.970-963-3304

Other Suns
With live music performed by The Paul Dresher EnsembleIn her 35-year career, Margaret Jenkins has created a body of work that is physically demanding, intellectually rigorous, and always imbued with interpretations about the human character. Other Suns is a trilogy of dances created by Jenkins and her Company in a cross-cultural collaboration with the Guangdong Modern Dance Company of Guangzhou, China and its executive artistic director, Liu Qi.Created over the past two years in both the U.S. and China, the trilogy features music by composers Paul Dresher and Bun Ching-Lam, visual design by Alexander V. Nichols and costumes by Laura Hazlett and Vivi Zhang.

Investigations of symmetry and asymmetry in both cultures reveal many balances and imbalances in our world–Other Suns examines that fragile place. With athleticism, technical acuity and nuance, the dancers from the MJDC and the GMDC create a highly charged landscape that transcends national and cultural borders.

Lucerne DeSa, pianistIn celebration of the 200th year of Robert Schumann’s birth, Karen Bentley Pollick teams up with BSC pianist Lucerne DeSa in a recital of duos by Schumann and his circle of friends and muses. Robert Schumann’s epic Sonata No. 2 in D minor for Violin and Piano anchors the program along with his Märchenbilder for Viola and Piano. The FAE Sonata is a musical tribute to the renowned Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim and is comprised of movements composed by Albert Dietrich, Johannes Brahms and Schumann. The performance concludes with a pair of delightful Romances by Clara and Robert Schumann.

Paul Dresher, quadrachord & electric guitarThe Bay Area debut of the Dresher Ensemble’s newest chamber music grouping–the Double Duo–features a program of challenging and exciting contemporary acoustic, electro-acoustic and invented instrument compositions by Paul Dresher, Sam Adams, and Martin Bresnick. The Double Duo features Dresher performing on electric guitar and his remarkable 15 foot-long invented stringed instrument, the Quadrachord, long-time Ensemble percussionist Joel Davel on the miraculous Marimba Lumina, virtuoso violinist Karen Bentley Pollick and pianist Lisa Moore, the noted contemporary music soloist and founding and long-time member of the Bang on A Can All Stars. Performing in various combinations of duo, trio and quartet, the Double Duo’s repertory highlights very recent works by Martin Bresnick (Bird As Prophet) and Sam Adams (John Adams’ very talented young son) composed specifically for Bentley Pollick and Moore, Dresher and Davel, performing their invented instrument duo Glimpsed From Afar (recently performed twice with the Los Angeles Philharmonic) as well long-time favorite Dresher compositions such as the trio Double Ikat, the duo Elapsed Time and a new quartet version of Chorale Times Two.

63 Chariton Drive, East Stroudsburg, PA 18301http://www.electricdiamond.com/ELECTRIC DIAMOND is arguably one of the longest-lived electronic performance ensembles – 35 years plus and going strong. The ensemble first performed in 1976 playing concerts at Carnegie Recital Hall, Symphony Space, the Guggenheim Museum and other venues of the New York 1970s new music scene. In the mid 1980’s electronic wind player founder Stuart Diamond joined forces with the ecletic electric keyboard innovator Don Slepian, whose credits and talents are legendary – from artist-engineer-in-residence at Bell Laboratories to the original ambient sound painter for “Music form the Hearts of Space”.

Together they began presenting programs that integrated classical music with free-flowing improvisations – from Bach to Mussorgsky, from medieval dances to Native American soundscapes. They have performed throughout America and Asia, performing for the erudite audiences at Steinway Hall to the mass audiences at the Macy’s 4th of July Celebration in downtown Manhattan.

ELECTRIC DIAMOND’s performances are truly “live”, without the use of any computer sequencing or multi tracking techniques. The results are performances of immediacy, power and authentic feeling.

ELECTRIC DIAMOND’s performances are seamless and flowing meditations, integrating classical, jazz, pop, folk, medieval music into the original sound that is Electric Diamond. Think electronic-classical-raga
