| About the Paul
Dresher Ensemble The Paul Dresher Ensemble Electro-Acoustic Band interprets the ideas and sounds of today's most innovative and irreverent composers with energy, virtuosity and incredible attention to the theatrical dimensions of performance. When joined by cellist Joan Jeanrenaud, concentrating on her own musical vision as a solo artist following 20 legendary years with the Kronos Quartet, they redefine the solo concerto. The repertory is as visionary as the players. Anthony Davis, whose ensemble Episteme has explored his unique blend of jazz, world and classical music, has crafted a tour-de-force concerto for the Ensemble and Jeanrenaud: Blue Funk into Darkness. Paul Dresher, founder and Artistic Director of the Ensemble, explores new and exciting musical potentialities with his own cello concerto, Unequal Distemperament, featuring hypnotic performances by Jeanrenaud and the Ensemble players. Each of these composers will be represented by an earlier work. Paul Dresher will reprise his classic solo electric guitar and tape loop work Dark Blue Circumstance. The Ensemble will also perform Davis' A Walk Through the Shadow, originally written for Episteme and transcribed by Ensemble electronic music specialist Mark Grey. The evening also features two works commissioned especially for Ensemble players; Pull of the Gold Rope by ensemble bassoonist Paul Hanson and a new version of John Luther Adams' arctic-inspired The Light that Fills the World. |
